The friction isn't a bug. It's the product.

Why Instagram won't let you search that story viewer list

Has this ever happened to you?

You post an Instagram story. Out of everyone who could see it, there's that ONE person you're actually waiting for.

You open the viewer list and scroll past 200 names looking for them, because Instagram won't just let you search that list.

For a while, this looked like a missing feature to me. It's trivial to build. Everyone would use it. So why isn't it there?

Then it clicked. And now I can't unsee it.

§ Here's the pattern underneath

Instagram ships features almost nobody uses, like comments on Notes, completely free. But a search bar that gets you what you came for? That one isn't free.

  • Anything additive (one more reason to open the app) ships free.

Cheap to build, and the downside is basically zero.

  • Anything subtractive (friction removed, you leave faster) cuts the one metric the whole business runs on.

So it doesn't ship. Or it goes behind a wall.

How a feature gets priced

And the paywalled ones tend to share a shape: they sell you back information about your own social life that the platform already holds and just won't show you for free. Who viewed. Who's still checking. All of it.

The friction isn't a gap they haven't gotten around to.

The friction is the product.

Fun fact: a version of the viewer search already exists in the paid tier. Which is sort of the whole point.

§ Over to you

What's a feature you've seen a product deliberately keep behind a wall, and what metric do you think it was protecting?
